Purpose The purpose of this study is to determine the effects of window proximity on perceptions of employees in the call center offices. Design/methodology/approach A semantic differential scale composed of nine bipolar adjectives, four of which dealt with “planning,” three of “privacy,” while the rest measured “lighting” was applied for evaluation. In total, 92 employees at the TEPE Call Center in the Bilkent District, Ankara, Turkey participated in the research. Findings The results showed that window proximity directly affected the call center employees’ perceptions. In addition, a positive approach was even less affected when the location of the workstation was more at the inner part of the workspace. On the contrary, workstations in front of the window were evaluated more positively, presumably because the employees were happy at feeling roomy and by giving them a higher level of privacy, while also minimizing distractions and interruptions. It was also found that call center employees with secondary education responded more positively than higher educated employees. Research limitations/implications This study was limited to examining the effects of window proximity in a call center on employees’ perceptions of an open-plan office. The study supports the results of planning, privacy and lighting, as well as the study on physical environmental factors, such as design, ambient and social, which are thought to be realized in the future. Originality/value This study presents suggestions that would be useful for increasing the working and solution-focused perceptual performance values in call center environments from the new generation of work areas. They should be appropriate for the psychological and physical needs of employees in twenty-first-century communication environments, especially in spatial environments and for the suitability of the technological equipment used.

Yaşamlarını doğuştan ya da sonradan, kalıcı ya da geçici engelli olarak geçirmeye mecbur kalan insanların yaşamlarını toplum ile bütünleşik ve dışlanma duygusu hissetmeden geçirmeleri esastır. Dolayısıyla tüm hizmetlerin, insanların fiziksel hareket kabiliyetlerine bakılmaksızın, sürdürülebilir ve ulaşılabilir biçimde sunulması ve beklentilerin mümkün olan en üst düzeyde karşılanması gerekmektedir. Topluma katılımları her anlamda teşvik edilen engelli bireylerin eğitim, iş, ulaşım vb ihtiyaçlarının karşılanması ve değerlendirilmesi noktasında yapılan çalışmalar gün geçtikçe artmaktadır. Ulaşılabilirlik kavramının yapılı çevrenin tüm bileşenlerine uyacak alternatif çözüm üretilebileceği öngörülmektedir. Ancak, bu ulaşılabilirlik yaklaşım ve kodlarının tarihi yapılı çevrede yapılması, korumanın tabiatı gereği mümkün olmayabilmektedir. Bu çalışmada, yeni yapı ve yaşam alanlarında gerek toplumsal gelişme ve gerekse de buna paralel mevzuat güncellemeleriyle engelli bireylere karşı mimari ulaşılabilirliğin sağlanmasına rağmen tarihi yapılı çevrede ulaşılabilirliğin aynı oranda sağlanamayabileceği bağlamında, Kütahya ilinde bulunan Seyhan Konağı yenilemesini irdelenmektedir. İşlev değişimi sonucu eğitim amaçlı kullanılmaya başlanan ve kamusal kimlik kazanan yapının, engelli personel, öğrenci, ziyaretçi vb bireyler açısından işlevsel ve etkili ulaşılabilirliği bağlamında geldiği nokta değerlendirilerek çözüm önerileri sunulmaktadır.

Kütahya, the ancient city in which we live, has a very rich history and cultural background. The capital of Germiyanoğulları Principality period, Beylerbeyi center of the Ottoman period, and the city of one of the city of sezade, has a rich architectural heritage in time to build on this importance. Today, a large number of monumental buildings built in different dates to serve different purposes from Castle, Hıdırlık Masjid, Vacidiye Madrasa to the Great Mosque, from Rüstem Paşa (Balıklı) Hamam to the Old Government Mansion, stand before us with all its magnificence and bear the spirit of the Civilization or period they belong to today. In Kütahya, a city that reflects the development and change of Anatolian culture and civilization, besides the monumental architectural examples, another witness of the rich architectural formation that illuminates the past is the houses of today. Our city is one of the lucky cities with its numerous houses and houses. Because a city with a historical identity, is not only monumental architectural examples from. An important part of the historical identity and architectural wealth of a city, which has not been able to preserve the examples of civil architecture, is missing. In this respect, it is necessary to acknowledge that it would be a great mistake to ignore what we call a civilian architectural example by limiting the architectural heritage of the city with only monumental architectural examples. When we visited our city, we lifted our heads and looked carefully we wanted to show what kind of beauty and value the city had played in shaping the city‘s historical texture along with the works we call monumental structure of the historical mansion, which was left by our ancestors as a legacy to us. In this study, the traditional Turkish houses in Kütahya center are under the scope of research. The decorations of these houses were examined and supported by photographs. In this study, the history and geographical characteristics of Kütahya province are introduced and the study of determination of the houses within the scope of the research, analysis and photographs of the decorations found in the houses are included.

In this study, it is aimed that positive direction for development of environmental conditions in employees‘ exterior space related open-plan office and improvement of comfort conditions of the call center tables using in the office. In the study, characteristics of call center tables it is assumed that the office employees sitting near the window will evaluate by perceiving more positive direction than center and inner parts and will evaluate the secondary education more positively than the higher education. To test this research hypothesis the experiment environment at big call center‘s open-plan office in Bilkent Center AVM was selected research survey was applied by this office‘s 92 participants. As a result, call center work table are considered “comfortable“ who is sitting near the window than center and inner parts, also evaluated the secondary education as “comfortable“, “useful“ and “measurements are sufficient“ compared to higher education. Summarily, said that important effects on consideration of employees place and general characteristics of the call center table in open-plan office.
